UK Games Industry Joins the Fight against Brexit
Since June of 2016, a day has rarely gone by in the United Kingdom without some piece of Brexit news. We have been inundated with an endless torrent of misery — and that's just from Downing Street.
It goes without saying at this point that Brexit is, and was always going to be, an unmitigated disaster. The far-right becomes emboldened by the hateful, isolationist rhetoric which fuelled the original clamours for a referendum; and the spineless Conservative government is appeasing every whim of its own disaster-capitalists who are more than happy to rouse the rabble in exchange for a quick payback.
But somehow, this is not even the worst of it. The economic impact of any kind of Brexit, let alone a "no-deal", is potentially catastrophic. This will be felt across the country, but is likely to impact most those industries which receive funding from the EU central budget. The games industry is one such beneficiary, as part of the billion-euro (yes, with a b!) Creative Europe fund amongst many other projects.
It's no surprise, therefore, that anti-brexit sentiment runs high throughout the industry. This has recently culminated in Games4EU, a not-for-profit organisation set up to combat Brexit directly on behalf of industry professionals. The project has seen great uptake in its early stages, having hit 1000 followers in under 36 hours.
The founding team consists of: events and PR specialist Tracey McGarrigan; industry advisor and lawyer Jas Purewal; and long-time anti-Brexit campaigner, journalist, and all-round good egg George Osborn. If you would like to get involved with the Games4EU project, you can sign up to the free newsletter or contact the team through their twitter.
We wish Games4EU the best of luck in their ongoing endeavours.
